MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Miami Township police will collect unused and expired prescription medications for safe disposal next month as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the department said in a Facebook post.
The collection runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the lobby of the Miami Township Police Department, 5900 McPicken Drive. Officers will not accept syringes, liquids, inhalers or creams, according to the post.
The take-back day is part of a national program the DEA has run twice a year since 2010 to give people a free, anonymous way to clear unused medications out of their homes, reducing the risk that pills end up misused or diverted. The agency’s most recent collection, in April, brought in more than 642,000 pounds of medication nationwide, pushing the program’s total haul past 21 million pounds since it began, according to the DEA.
Local law enforcement agencies, including Miami Township’s, partner with the DEA to staff collection sites during each cycle. The township department is led by Chief Robert Hirsch, who was appointed to the post in 2024 after joining the department as a patrol officer in 2007 and rising through field training, patrol supervision and operations command.
