BATAVIA, Ohio — Kingston, the longest-serving dog at the Clermont County Animal Shelter, left for a new home Sunday after a shelter volunteer drove four hours to place him with an out-of-state rescue group in what shelter officials called a “rescue swap.”
Volunteer Joy made the drive to deliver Kingston to CRC Rescue, where he was placed with the rescue’s founder, Randy, according to a Facebook post from the shelter. The shelter said Randy had previously adopted Anthony, a dog who was formerly the shelter’s longest-term resident, a connection that led to Sunday’s placement.

The trip was not a one-way drop-off, the shelter said. In exchange, the Clermont County Animal Shelter took in a German shepherd named General from CRC Rescue, adding him to its roster of adoptable animals. Shelter staff said they plan to share more about General’s background in the coming days.

Kingston had previously been highlighted by the shelter as one of its longest-tenured residents, alongside another dog, Beau, in an appeal urging residents to consider adopting animals whose personalities, rather than their adoptability, had kept them from finding a home.
The shelter credited its volunteers and CRC Rescue for Kingston’s placement. “Thank you to our unstoppable volunteers and to CRC Rescue for proving that when we work together, rescue magic happens,” the shelter said in its Facebook post.
