BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Batavia Township has mapped out a week-by-week schedule for swapping residents’ trash and recycling carts as the township switches haulers from Republic Services to Rumpke Waste & Recycling on Nov. 1.
About half of township households — those whose recycling is normally collected the week of Oct. 19 — will have their recycling carts swapped first, the township said. A contracted vendor will pick up each empty Republic cart and drop off a new Rumpke cart the same day or the following day; those same households will get new trash carts during the week of Oct. 26, when the rest of the township’s trash and recycling carts are also scheduled to be exchanged, according to the township.
Residents were told to set out their empty carts at the curb after normal collection and let the vendor make the swap, rather than adding trash once a Republic cart has been emptied for the final time, the township said.
Standard service includes one 96-gallon trash cart and one 65-gallon recycling cart, or a smaller cart for households that already use one, according to the township. Residents can request an additional cart for $2 a month or ask to switch to a smaller 65-gallon trash cart once the initial exchange is finished; each household is limited to three carts total — two for trash and one for recycling, the township said.
Collection days are not changing for now, and recycling pickup will be weekly under the new contract, included in the standard rate, the township said. Rumpke will contact residents directly if collection days change later.
Service with Republic ends Oct. 31, and the township is telling residents not to pay Republic for anything beyond that date; anyone who overpays will be refunded in November, according to the township. Billing questions about the outgoing contract should still go to Republic, the township said.
Rumpke will bill households directly, with the first invoice arriving in mid-November covering three months of service, from November through January, at $21.50 a month or $64.50 per quarter, the township said. The next quarterly bill, covering February through April, is expected in January.
Batavia Township trustees awarded the Rumpke contract in July, ending a longstanding agreement with Republic and lowering the monthly rate from $24.70, according to the township. The board — Randy Perry, Rex Parsons and Danielle Wessel, along with fiscal officer Jennifer Haley — oversees the township, according to its website. Rumpke, founded in 1932 by William F. Rumpke and based in Colerain Township near Cincinnati, is one of the largest privately held waste and recycling haulers in the region.
Residents with questions about the new service can call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171, the township said. Additional pricing and service details are posted on the township’s website.
