BATAVIA, Ohio — The Batavia branch of the Clermont County Public Library has lined up a summer’s worth of free programs for all ages, from an axolotl encounter this week to a session on invasive plants next month, alongside its annual summer reading program and free online classes for older adults.
Library patrons can meet the aquatic salamanders during “Amazing Axolotls,” an all-ages program set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, according to the library. On Aug. 18, the Clermont County Park District will lead a 6 p.m. program on invasive plants.
The library’s summer calendar also included two earlier programs: a July 14 session in which children explored “Accidental Inventions” discovered in Ohio, tied to the America250 anniversary celebration, and a July 21 workshop where adults decorated their own foraging aprons.
The branch is also running its annual Summer Reading Program through the end of July, with participants signing up for a free book and weekly raffle tickets toward prize bundles, the library said.
For older adults, the library offers free access to GetSetUp, an online learning platform with live and on-demand classes covering health, technology and other topics. The service, free to Clermont County library cardholders, includes more than 5,000 course topics across more than 40 categories, taught in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Hindi.
The Batavia branch, at 180 S. Third St., opened in 1961 and was renamed in 1990 for Doris E. Wood, the library system’s first head librarian. Clermont County voters approved creating the countywide library system in 1948; a seven-member board of trustees was appointed the following year, and library services began in 1955. The system now operates 10 branches across the county.
