BATAVIA, Ohio — Duke Energy crews were working Wednesday to restore power across the Village of Batavia and surrounding Clermont County, with some customers not expected to have electricity back until Thursday, according to the village.
The utility’s outage map showed thousands of customers still without power around Batavia as of 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, the village said in a Facebook post, adding that outage counts were changing throughout the day. The outages follow severe thunderstorms that swept the region this week and knocked out power to roughly 40,000 Duke Energy customers countywide, according to the utility.
The village said it opened the Armory, its municipal building, to residents who need to charge a phone, find relief or get the latest information while power remains out. The building has electricity and air conditioning, according to the post.
The village urged residents to treat any downed power line as live and to call 911 to report one rather than approach it. Where traffic signals are dark because of the outage, drivers should treat the intersection as a four-way stop, the village said.
Residents running generators should keep them outdoors and away from windows and doors, and never run one in a garage even with the door open, according to the post. The village also asked residents to check on neighbors, particularly older residents and anyone who relies on medical equipment.
The village said it would continue to share updates on its Facebook page as they become available.
