MILFORD, Ohio — Dennis Haylon was installed as the new president of the Kiwanis Club of Milford at the club’s 77th installation dinner, the club said in a Facebook post.

Haylon takes the gavel of a civic organization that has been active in Milford for nearly a century. The Kiwanis Club of Milford was chartered in 1928, according to the club, and its members hold their meetings at the Harry Hodges Conference Room in the Milford City Building, 745 Center St.

The Milford club is a local chapter of Kiwanis International, a service organization founded in Detroit in 1915 by Allen S. Browne and Joseph G. Prance. The group initially mixed business networking with charitable work before formally adopting a service-focused mission in 1919; its guiding Objects of Kiwanis, which member clubs still follow today, were adopted in 1924.

Kiwanis International now has more than 600,000 members in upwards of 80 countries and geographic areas, according to the organization, with member clubs together logging more than 18.5 million volunteer hours and raising over $100 million a year for children’s and community causes.

In Milford, the club has carried out that mission locally by awarding scholarships each year to graduating Milford High School seniors, among other community service projects, the club said.
