BATAVIA, Ohio — Ohio Department of Transportation crews have finished the main phase of a road-safety project at State Route 32 and Herold Road, reopening the intersection to normal traffic in both directions after weeks of lane closures, according to a Village of Batavia social media post.
Herold Road has also reopened, the village said, thanking drivers who planned ahead and drove patiently through the work zones over the past few weeks.
The project, which began July 6, involved building concrete islands on Herold Road, adding a concrete curb along the Route 32 median and widening and extending the left-turn lane from eastbound Route 32 onto northbound Herold Road, according to ODOT. The work replaced a temporary curb the village had installed in September 2025 to restrict unsafe turning movements at the intersection.
ODOT pursued the estimated $762,908 project after a fatal three-vehicle crash at the intersection in September 2024 killed one woman and sent several others to the hospital, intensifying calls for a permanent fix. The John R. Jurgensen Co. built the project.
Although traffic is now moving freely, ODOT has said the project will not be fully complete until November, when crews finish final paving and striping work.
The Route 32 work is separate from broader, long-term corridor improvement efforts underway in Clermont County to reduce at-grade intersections along one of southern Ohio’s busiest east-west routes.
