BATAVIA, Ohio — Batavia Township and Village residents will have a free, secure way to dispose of sensitive paperwork next month, as the township hosts a community shred event to help guard against identity theft.
The Community Shred Event runs from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 at the Central Joint Fire-EMS District headquarters, 2401 Old State Route 32, according to a flyer posted by the township. The event is open only to Batavia Township and Village residents, who must show proof of residency and are limited to three boxes of documents per household.
The event accepts office paper, computer paper, copy paper and notepads, magazines and newspapers, envelopes with windows, manila and hanging file folders, and staples, paper clips, binder clips and rubber bands, the flyer states. It will not accept metal objects, microfilm, PC boards and hard drives, cardboard or boxes, computer printout binders, three-ring binders, X-rays, labels, stickers, fabrics, textiles, plastics, wood, glass, CDs or backup tapes.
The event is sponsored by Batavia Township and the Central Joint Fire-EMS District, which has hosted the shred day at its headquarters in past years as a public service to residents looking to safely destroy old tax records, bank statements and other documents that carry personal information.
Central Joint Fire-EMS District was formed Jan. 1, 2002, after voters in Batavia Township and Batavia Village approved a November 2001 referendum to consolidate fire and EMS coverage that had previously been split between the Batavia Township Fire and Rescue Department in the north and the BMOP Volunteer Fire Company in the south. The district is governed by a five-member board made up of two township trustees, two village council members and a community member-at-large, and now responds to more than 4,600 calls for service each year from its two fire stations.
Batavia Township, established in 1815, is one of Clermont County’s original townships and describes itself on its seal as “The Heart of Clermont.”
