BATAVIA, Ohio — The Clermont County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Sept. 17-23, 2026, as Constitution Week during its regular session Wednesday, marking the 239th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Commissioners Bonnie Batchler, David Painter and Claire Corcoran presented the proclamation to members of the Clough Valley Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Accepting on the chapter’s behalf were Paige Craig, Regent Debby Niehaus and Constitution Week Committee Chair Cindy Abbott, according to the county.
Sept. 17 marks the anniversary of the Constitutional Convention’s 1787 signing in Philadelphia, which established the framework of American government still in use today. The county said the observance is meant to highlight the Constitution’s role as the foundation of the nation’s representative democracy and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Constitution Week traces its roots to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, which petitioned Congress in 1955 to set aside the third week of September each year for the observance. Congress adopted the resolution into public law in 1956, and it has been marked nationally every year since.
The Clough Valley Chapter, based in Milford, was founded in 1960 and serves DAR members across Clermont, Hamilton and eastern Cincinnati-area communities. The chapter’s work includes historic preservation projects, genealogical research, literacy advocacy and support for veterans and active-duty military personnel, according to the organization.
The commissioners’ proclamation is a symbolic, non-binding measure that carries no force of law but is intended to draw public attention to the observance during the coming week.
