BATAVIA, Ohio — Members of the Aktion Club of Clermont County ran an ice cream social at a youth cheer expo Sunday, raising money that will buy holiday gifts for people supported by the Clermont County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
The self-advocacy group set up its stand from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 13 at the expo in Batavia, but sold out of ice cream by 3 p.m., according to a Facebook post from the Clermont County Board of Developmental Disabilities, known as Clermont DD. Customers made donations for a bowl of ice cream with toppings and a bottle of water.
Club President David Pursley lined up donations from several local restaurants and businesses ahead of time so the fundraiser carried no overhead costs, Clermont DD said in the post. Pursley was elected to a one-year term as club president in August.
All of the proceeds will go toward the Clermont DD Giving Tree, a program the agency runs each holiday season to buy gifts for the people it supports, according to the post.
The Aktion Club is a community service organization for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, sponsored locally through Clermont DD in partnership with Kiwanis International. Aktion Club is billed as the only service club in the world built specifically for adults with disabilities, giving members a structured way to take on leadership roles, volunteer and raise money for causes in their own communities.
Clermont DD, based in Batavia, provides service coordination, early intervention and other support to Clermont County residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
