BATAVIA, Ohio — Democrats Amy Acton and Sherrod Brown sent a blue shockwave across Ohio on Tuesday night, with the Clermont Guardian projecting Acton as the state’s next governor and Brown as the winner of Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat, even as Clermont County voted overwhelmingly Republican and rejected the Union Township police-and-fire levy and several other local tax issues.
Acton, a Democrat, led Republican Vivek Ramaswamy 52.3% to 44.4% in the race for governor and lieutenant governor, 2,406,470 votes to 2,045,832, with all 8,834 of Ohio’s precincts reporting, according to unofficial results from the Ohio Secretary of State. Libertarian Don Kissick had 3.3%, or 152,371 votes.
Brown led Republican Jon Husted 50.0% to 45.2% in the race for the U.S. Senate seat’s unexpired term ending Jan. 3, 2029, 2,303,165 votes to 2,083,847, with all precincts reporting. Libertarian William Redpath had 2.8%, or 128,685 votes.
The Guardian’s projections are its own, based on precincts reporting and the margins in each race, and all results remain unofficial until certified. None of that Democratic energy reached Clermont County, where Republicans swept the local ballot and voters rejected several tax levies, according to unofficial results from the Ohio Secretary of State. Voters in Union Township turned down an additional levy that would have funded extra police and fire protection, rejecting it 10,524 to 9,785 across all 38 township precincts.
Republican state Rep. Jean Schmidt won reelection to Ohio House District 62, but turned in the weakest performance of any Republican on the Clermont County ballot. Schmidt defeated Democrat Ian Schwartz and Libertarian Ron Grethel, 28,626 votes to 22,077 to 3,536.
Ramaswamy and Husted carried Clermont County by wide margins even as they trailed statewide. Ramaswamy beat Acton 51,058 to 35,208 in the county, and Husted beat Brown 51,134 to 33,442, with Redpath taking 3,030 votes and independent Greg Levy 1,777.
Republican Claire Corcoran won election as county commissioner, defeating Democrat Joe Wessels 53,560 to 33,869. Republican Adam Bird won reelection to Ohio House District 63 over Democrat Debbie Davidson, 22,504 to 11,371.
In the 2nd Congressional District, Republican David Taylor defeated Democrat Jen Mazzuckelli 54,879 to 33,196 in the county, and the Guardian projects Taylor won the district with all 738 of its precincts reporting.
Clermont voters renewed the county’s Children Services levy, 51,392 votes to 36,837. But they rejected a renewal levy for the Bethel-Tate Local School District, 1,831 to 1,709; an additional bond issue and levy for the U.S. Grant Joint Vocational School District, 7,262 to 6,389; and an additional levy for Batavia Township, 5,687 to 5,589. Washington Township’s additional levy passed, 486 to 354.
State Issue 3, which requires voters to present photo identification, passed in Clermont County, 63,553 votes to 25,006, and the Guardian projects it also passed statewide.
Across Clermont County, 90,233 ballots were cast out of 150,008 registered voters, according to unofficial figures from the Ohio Secretary of State. The Secretary of State’s office reported 45 outstanding absentee ballots and 1,357 outstanding provisional ballots yet to be counted.
