MONROE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A Clermont County grand jury has indicted a Monroe Township woman and a Pierce Township man after an investigation into a 2-year-old boy’s marijuana exposure led authorities to a residence containing dozens of marijuana plants, mushroom spores, illegal drugs, cash and firearms, according to the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office.
The grand jury returned the indictment June 30 against Brooklyn Maffey, 21, of Monroe Township, and William J. Wilson, 38, of Pierce Township, the sheriff’s office said.
Maffey faces one count of child endangering and one count of corrupting another with drugs, both second-degree felonies. Wilson faces one count of corrupting another with drugs, also a second-degree felony, along with 11 counts of having weapons under disability, all third-degree felonies.
The case began June 19 at 10:37 a.m., when the Clermont County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive 2-year-old boy in the 2100 block of Laurel Lindale Road in Monroe Township. During the call, the dispatcher heard information suggesting the child may have ingested marijuana, authorities said.
Deputies and Monroe Township EMS responded and found the child in stable condition. He was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center for evaluation, where medical tests showed he was positive for cannabinoids, chemical compounds found in cannabis that produce physical and psychological effects, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators with the sheriff’s office’s investigations division opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the incident. Maffey, the child’s mother, told detectives she was unsure what caused her son’s condition but gave investigators information about events leading up to it, according to the report.
That information led detectives to a home in the 1100 block of Ivy Farm Way in Pierce Township, which they identified as the likely location where the exposure occurred. The investigation also identified Wilson, who lived at the residence, as a suspect in the cultivation and trafficking of marijuana, authorities said.
On June 22, detectives with the sheriff’s investigations division and the Clermont County Narcotics Task Force, assisted by the Pierce Township Police Department, executed a search warrant at the Ivy Farm Way home.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators seized:
- Roughly $24,600 in cash
- 11 firearms
- 45 marijuana plants
- About 12.33 pounds of marijuana flower
- About 25.48 pounds of mushroom spores
- About 754.1 grams of THC derivative products
- Roughly 147 pills of varying types
- Equipment related to the cultivation, preparation and trafficking of marijuana
During the search, Wilson voluntarily spoke with detectives about the incident involving Maffey and her child and acknowledged having direct knowledge of how the boy came into contact with the drug, authorities said.
Wilson was arrested and taken to the Clermont County Jail, where he was initially charged with having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony; illegal cultivation of marijuana, a fourth-degree felony; and trafficking in drugs, a fifth-degree felony.
He was arraigned June 23 before Clermont County Municipal Court Magistrate Matthew Graber and released after posting a $20,000 cash or surety bond. His preliminary hearing had been scheduled for July 2 before Clermont County Municipal Court Judge Katherine Terpstra, but that case will be dismissed as a result of the grand jury indictment, the sheriff’s office said. Any further proceedings against Wilson will move forward in Clermont County Common Pleas Court.
Following the indictment, deputies arrested both Maffey and Wilson without incident and booked them into the Clermont County Jail, where they are being held without bond. Both are scheduled to be arraigned July 1 at 10 a.m. before Clermont County Common Pleas Judge Jason Nagel.
