BATAVIA, Ohio — A microwave fire in the Clermont Northeastern High School cafeteria set off a fire alarm and evacuation Wednesday afternoon, though firefighters found no active fire when they arrived, Stonelick Township Fire Rescue said.

Crews were dispatched to the school after the alarm sounded. While units were en route, the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer assigned to the building radioed an update: food had burned in a microwave in the cafeteria, and there was no fire, according to a Stonelick Township Fire Rescue Facebook post.

Units continued to the school and found that all students and staff had already evacuated the building quickly and safely, the department said.

Out of an abundance of caution, crews used positive pressure ventilation fans to clear the burnt-food odor from the cafeteria and adjacent hallways before students and staff were allowed back inside, according to the fire department.

The fire department thanked staff and students for evacuating quickly once the alarm sounded and credited the resource officer’s early update with helping crews respond efficiently to the scene.
