BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Batavia Township has set up dumpsters at two public locations for residents to dispose of household trash after two weeks of delayed pickups from Republic Services, the township said Monday.
The township said it has received conflicting information from residents and from Republic representatives about the cause of the delays and is directing residents to contact Republic directly for service updates. Residents whose collection was skipped for a week should request a refund from Republic for that week of missed service, according to the township.

While the township contracts trash service on residents’ behalf, it does not control the hauler’s operations, the township said. Republic has cited several maintenance issues as the reason for the delays, according to the township.
To help residents through the disruption, the township is providing dumpsters at the Township Park, 1535 Clough Pike, and at the township Service Department, 2401 Old State Route 32. Residents may take household trash to either location as needed, the township said.
The delays come as the township prepares to switch waste haulers. Batavia Township trustees awarded a new trash and recycling contract to Rumpke Waste & Recycling in July, ending the township’s longtime agreement with Republic and lowering the monthly rate from $24.70 to $21.50, according to the township. Service with Republic ends Oct. 31, and Rumpke takes over Nov. 1, the township has said.
The township previously told residents not to pay Republic for any billing that extends beyond Oct. 31 and said anyone who overpays will be refunded in November. Rumpke crews have already been auditing collection routes in the township ahead of the switch, and residents are expected to receive a mailer directly from Rumpke with instructions for establishing service, according to the township.
Township officials apologized for the inconvenience to residents and said billing questions about the outgoing Republic contract should continue to go to Republic.
