MILFORD, Ohio — Chocolate lovers will have more than 30 reasons to walk downtown Milford’s Main Street on Oct. 24, as the Eastside Chocolate Walk returns to benefit the Greater Milford Area Historical Society.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with check-in closing at 2 p.m., according to a post from the historical society. Participants will stop at more than 30 locations along Main Street, many inside buildings with decades of local history, and organizers have capped ticket sales at 220.
The walk is organized by the Eastside Business Alliance, a Milford-based nonprofit that says it supports small businesses and community organizations through networking events, marketing help and educational workshops. Shoppers who enter the code PROMONT at checkout get $1 off their ticket, and the alliance will donate $5 per ticket sold with that code to the historical society, the post said.
Proceeds support the society’s work preserving local history, including its headquarters at Promont, the Italianate Victorian mansion at 906 Main St. The three-story house was built in 1865 by William McGrue and later became the residence of Ohio Gov. John M. Pattison, the state’s 43rd governor. Pattison, weakened by illness after his 1906 inauguration, governed from Promont until his death that June.
Promont was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 while still privately owned. James Kirgan, a later owner, left the home to the historical society in his will, and the society moved its collection into the mansion in 1983. It now operates as a historic house museum with Victorian-era furnishings, tours and a local history library.
