MILFORD, Ohio — Crews with the Milford Community Fire Department are working through the city’s streets this month on the department’s annual fire hydrant service program, testing and maintaining hydrants ahead of winter.

The work is being conducted on weekdays through October, the department said in a Facebook post, and is intended to ensure hydrants operate properly and are prepared for freezing temperatures later in the year. Residents may notice temporary water discoloration in the area while hydrants are flushed and serviced, the department said.

Anyone with questions about the work or discolored water is asked to call the Milford Water Department at 513-831-6819, according to the fire department.

The city’s water department, which has provided drinking water to Milford customers since 1936, serves more than 6,000 customers from a groundwater treatment plant drawing on aquifers along the Little Miami River. Regular hydrant flushing helps clear mineral sediment that can build up in water lines, which is the source of the temporary discoloration crews warn about during the work.

The Milford Community Fire Department provides fire and emergency medical services to the city and keeps a minimum of six personnel on duty around the clock, according to the department. It operates as a not-for-profit corporation funded by a fire and EMS levy approved by city voters.
