PIERCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Locust Corner Elementary School will hold a “reverse parade” on Nov. 11 to honor local veterans, according to New Richmond Exempted Village Schools.
The event is set for 2 p.m. at the school, 3431 Locust Corner Road, weather permitting, the district said in a Facebook post. Veterans and their families attending are asked to enter through the school’s main entrance.
In a reverse parade, the procession runs in the opposite direction of a traditional march: honorees travel past a stationary crowd rather than the crowd lining a route to watch them pass. Schools across the country have adopted the format in recent years as a way to recognize veterans without leaving the building, often having students line hallways, a gymnasium or a parking lot with flags and handmade signs as veterans and their escorts move through.
Veterans Day falls annually on Nov. 11, marking the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended fighting in World War I. The observance was first recognized nationally as Armistice Day and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.
Locust Corner Elementary serves students in prekindergarten through fifth grade and is one of four schools in New Richmond Exempted Village Schools, a public school district in southwestern Clermont County that also includes New Richmond High School, New Richmond Middle School and Monroe Elementary School.
