UNION TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Union Township police plan to host their annual Police Night Out on Aug. 6, inviting residents to meet officers and firefighters and see their equipment during a free community event at Veterans Memorial Park.
The event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the park, 906 Clough Pike, according to the Union Township Police Department. Organizers said the evening is meant to build safer neighborhoods and strengthen relationships between residents and public safety personnel.
Planned activities include safety demonstrations, a raffle, a dunking booth, a petting zoo, face painting and police canine demonstrations, along with displays of the vehicles and equipment used by township officers and firefighters, according to the township.
The Union Township Police Department was established in 1965 with two part-time officers under founding Chief Paul Herrmann, after the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office had previously handled policing duties for the township, according to the department. The agency has since grown into a 60-member, nationally accredited department that also operates its own communications center, which has provided 911 dispatch services for the township and the village of Amelia since 1984.
Chief Anthony Rees currently leads the department, which also runs a Citizens Police Academy, women’s self-defense classes and children’s gun safety instruction as part of its broader community outreach efforts, according to the township.
