MILFORD, Ohio — The Greater Milford Area Historical Society is looking for a new volunteer treasurer for its board of directors after longtime board member George Nyktas stepped down from the post.
The nonprofit society, which owns and operates the Promont museum on Main Street, said in a Facebook post that it is seeking someone to take over the unpaid board position. Those interested, or who know someone who might be, are asked to contact Board President Mary Nyktas at [email protected].
The historical society traces its roots to 1967, when it was founded as Old Milford Incorporated to preserve the history of Milford and Miami Township. It has since grown into the steward of Promont, an 1865 Italianate Victorian mansion at 906 Main St. that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Promont’s best-known former owner is John M. Pattison, who purchased the home in 1879 and went on to serve as the 43rd governor of Ohio. Pattison, a Civil War veteran and Owensville native, was inaugurated in January 1906 but was so weakened by illness that he returned to Promont the same day and directed state government from the house until his death that June, according to public biographical records. He is buried in Milford’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
Today the historical society runs Promont as a museum, offering docent-led public tours on the first, third and fifth Sundays of the month and hosting educational programs, book club meetings and its annual Art Affaire festival. The society is run by a volunteer board of directors, funded in part through membership dues, tours and donations.
