UNION TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Multiple fire departments responded to a working fire at a strip shopping center in the 4500 block of Eastgate Boulevard shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to initial emergency radio traffic.
Crews were first dispatched for a fire outside the building, but the call was quickly upgraded to a “high hazard working fire” after firefighters began receiving multiple reports of flames near the top of the structure, according to radio traffic.
The fire was reported at the rear of a large one-story strip center, near a trash compactor, according to units on scene. The first engine to arrive reported crews were operating in an offensive attack as they established a water supply, according to radio traffic.
Dispatchers routed all responding units to a dedicated fire-ground channel and requested mutual aid from neighboring departments. Units heard responding included a tower ladder, two quints, multiple engines and medic crews from Anderson Township and Milford, according to radio traffic.
Firefighters searched the interior of the building to check whether the fire had spread toward the roof; radio traffic indicated it had not. Employees and customers were kept out of the building for a time before being allowed to return once the fire was brought under control, according to radio traffic.
No injuries were reported over the radio, and a cause had not been determined as of the initial response, according to available radio traffic.
