BATAVIA, Ohio — Batavia Village Council will hold a special meeting to formally respond to an annexation petition filed with the Clermont County Board of Commissioners, the village said in a Facebook post.
Ohio Revised Code requires council to respond within 14 days of the county filing, according to the village. Members are set to consider two ordinances: one acknowledging the annexation petition, and a second stating the municipal services — including police and street services — the village would provide to the property once it is annexed.
The meeting is open to the public, and the village said it will post the agenda at bataviaoh.gov once it is finalized. The village did not identify the property or its size ahead of the meeting.
Under Ohio’s annexation laws, a property owner seeking to join a municipality petitions the county board of commissioners, which then notifies the affected municipality and any township that includes part of the territory. The municipal legislative authority must act on the petition within a statutory window, or the annexation is deemed approved by default.
Batavia Village Council is led by Mayor C. Scott Runck, who was sworn in Jan. 1, 2024, after previously serving on council and on the Batavia Local School District Board of Education. Council’s six members are Vice Mayor Steve Staton and members Laura Zagar, Mark Wilson, Jim Owens, Randy Dorsey and Tom Smith, according to the village. Batavia, established in 1814, serves as the seat of Clermont County government.
